Services for K-12 Students

Reading and Literacy Assessment

When a new student first arrives at the Reading Center, the Reading Specialist conducts an initial intake assessment. This initial screening is informal to ensure that the child and parent feel comfortable with Reading Center personnel. The Reading Specialist begins with an interview with the parents to help determine their child's interests and to develop trust and rapport. The Reading Specialist then fills out an Initial Screening Inventory asking the child and parents/guardians some questions related to interests, reading likes and dislikes, friends, and school performance. After the initial consultation the Reading Specialist and Reading Center faculty determine the next course of action. A short diagnostic battery of tests will be suggested. If requested by parents, a complete assessment will be administered to better serve the student's needs. This would be scheduled for another day. The process is outlined below.

Level One Assessment

Initial Student Screening: When a new student first arrives at the Reading Center, the Reading Specialist conducts an initial screening. This initial screening is informal to ensure that the child and parent feel comfortable with Reading Center personnel. The Reading Specialist begins with an interview with the parents to help determine their child’s interests and to develop trust and rapport. The Reading Specialist then fills out an Initial Screening Inventory asking the child and parents/guardians some questions related to interests, reading likes and dislikes, friends, and school performance. Students will read a selected passage to determine fluency and comprehension levels. After the initial screening the Reading Specialist and Reading Center faculty determine the next course of action. A short diagnostic battery of tests will be administered.   If requested by parents, a complete assessment will be administered to better serve the student’s needs.

Short Diagnostic Battery: Based on the Initial Student Screening, reading and diagnostic tests are selected to determine how to best serve the needs of the student. A report is generated with suggestions for the parents/guardians and a plan for success is shared with the family by the Reading Center Faculty.  Programs that will most benefit the student during instruction will be discussed. Ongoing assessment and progress monitoring throughout the student’s enrollment at the center are also included in the Level 1 Assessment package. A phone consultation with the child’s teacher is also included in this step if requested by the parent. Pricing for the Level 1 Assessment package is $250.

Level Two Assessment

Complete Assessment: Reading Center faculty offer an in-depth assessment package upon request. The Reading Center Faculty will evaluate the information gathered from level one and level two assessments. The parents/guardians and student (when appropriate) will then consult with the Reading Specialist to determine the level of service. Payment for this service includes level one assessment and is $400.

In Depth Consultation: Includes an evaluation of previously administered assessments, past relevant records, and school visit. Minimum time: 2 hours. (Includes a one-hour evaluation of assessment forms/past records and face to face conference with school personnel.) This service is done on request and the price is $75.
